Midwifery is a special kind of care provided in partnership with expecting mothers. Midwives interact with women to provide them with the tools to achieve their desired birth experience in a safe environment. Midwives devote more time to women prior to labor and birth, as well as during the labor and birth process. Midwives are highly trained to recognize complications early and refer for the appropriate care.  The Boojum midwives work collaboratively with Dr. David Kells.

Midwives provide women of all ages with healthcare and support throughout their lifetime. Midwives conduct annual physicals, cervical cancer screenings and other screenings. Midwives provide family planning services and can address minor gynecological problems.

Midwives endeavor to create a safe space where women can  make decisions regarding their bodies. Midwives view birth, puberty and menopause as normal life processes. These events do not ordinarily require a high degree of medical intervention. Midwives can provide education and support during these monumental life events that will assist women to feel in tune with their bodies.

We cannot thank you enough  for the wonderful experience we had during the birth of our daughter.  You were so amazing throughout the entire process.  We loved your centering classes and really learned a lot of valuable information from you.  Choosing you to deliver our baby was the best decision ever! I don't think I could have gotten through it without your kindness, sense of humor, and encouragement.  Our labor and delivery was truly a fun experience, thanks to you! (Besides the "Ring of Fire" there at the end). Again, thank you so much, Ramona.  We will be back for #2.

My pregnancy and birth was a wonderful experience because of Tiffany, my midwife. She is very passionate about pregnancy and women’s health in general. She was not only worried about me and my new baby but about the family unit as a whole. She took time to sit and talk with us and made me feel like more than a patient but a friend. During the birth of my daughter she was not just there to catch her but took time to coach me and my family step by step through the whole process. It was a more natural and calm experience. It is one I will never forget. She is part of my family now and I am having her deliver my fourth baby this August. Thanks Tiffany!

Certified Nurse-Midwife. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are licensed healthcare practitioners educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery and are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. They provide primary healthcare to women of childbearing age including: prenatal care, labor and delivery care, care after birth, gynecological exams, newborn care, assistance with family planning decisions, preconception care, menopausal management and counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention. CNMs attend almost 8 percent of the births in the United States. 96 percent of these births are in hospitals.

Certified Midwife. A certified midwife (CM) is an individual educated in the discipline of midwifery, who also possesses evidence of certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board. Like CNMs, the CM provides primary healthcare to women of childbearing age including: prenatal care, labor and delivery care, care after birth, gynecological exams, newborn care, assistance with family planning decisions, preconception care, menopausal management and counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention.

Other midwives. The overwhelming majority of midwives are either CNMs or CMs. Still, a variety of titles are used to label midwifery practice so it can be confusing for consumers who want to determine just what qualifications have been met by their midwife. ACNM believes that, in the United States, all midwives should graduate from an accredited midwifery education program that is affiliated with an institution of higher education. All CNMs and CMs have earned at least a bachelor's degree, while over 80 percent hold a master's degree or higher. ACNM also believes that midwives should be licensed to practice and should provide their clients with a safe mechanism for consultation, collaboration and referral if needed. Because standards for the education and practice of midwifery may vary, we urge consumers to carefully evaluate credentials and look for a well-educated provider who allows direct access to medical care if needed.

Doula. The doula's role is to provide physical and emotional support to women and their partners during labor and birth. A doula offers information, assistance and advice on topics such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. Perhaps the most crucial role of the doula is to provide continuous emotional reassurance and comfort. Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, such as vaginal exams or fetal heart rate monitoring. Doulas do not diagnose medical conditions or give medical advice. Doulas and midwives often work together as their philosophy and practice is complementary. At times, midwives need help because of the complex course of labor or the competing needs of more than one woman, which makes the doula-midwife team a wonderful option.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           ~ American College of Nurse-Midwives
